Underlay is the rubbery area underneath carpets that is always purchased with new flooring, but why do we need it?
Perhaps the most important reason for installing underlay is because of how it makes your new flooring look and feel. Underlay has a cushioning effect on flooring making it more comfortable to stand or sit on, as well as stopping the carpet pile from flattening. Because of this, your carpet will look and feel like new for longer.
As well helping you carpet look and feel great, underlay also has an insulating effect. It keeps your carpet warm and also reduces noise, as well as absorbing shock which makes the carpet sit properly. Underlay is a great way to ensure your carpet’s durability, having a lasting effect on its lifespan.
Finally, underlay makes cleaning your carpet a lot easier thanks to its ability to protect the carpet pile from dust and dirt. Having an underlay prevents the dirt getting trapped in the carpet fibres which makes vacuuming a much each simpler task.
Which underlay is right for me?
There are many different types of underlay that all have their strengths and suitability for different areas of your home.
Sponge underlay is manufactured from an odourless synthetic rubber that is more durable than natural rubbers. Sponge underlay has a fantastic feel underfoot, but furniture indents can be deeper than a firmer underlay. Sponge underlay is perfect for bedrooms or play areas where comfort underfoot is key.
This underlay is especially designed for laminate and hard wood floors as it has a higher density of rubber than most other underlay types. It’s special vapour barrier also helps protect your flooring from any trapped moisture.
Crumb underlay is made up of recycled car tyres and is the most popular underlay in the UK. The car tyres are granulated into small particles and bound together to create an extremely durable underlay. This particular underlay is most suitable is best suited to high traffic areas such as walkways, or areas in your home that have heavy furniture as it is extremely resistant to indentation marks. Crumb underlay is also the most environmentally-friendly as it is only made up of recycled post-consumer waste.
Recycled felt underlay
This underlay is manufactured completely from off-cuttings collected from carpet mills, making it the perfect choice for those who are looking for an environmentally friendly underlay. It is made with at least 50% wool giving it a softness underfoot, as well as holding a good amount of warmth. This makes it a great choice for bedrooms and areas that have concrete or draughty floorboards. There is one other recycled underlay that includes a rubber base, much like the crumb underlay, this particular underlay is both soft underfoot and has a firm support.
